TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The University of Arizona men’s golf team lost to Stanford in the third-place match Sunday at the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
Thirteenth-seeded Arizona fell to 15th-seeded Stanford, 3-1-1. The match was close throughout, with three of the five singles matches were 1-up decisions.
Arizona got its lone individual win from Travis Esway. Esway, a sophomore from Granite Bay, Calif., soundly defeated Stanford’s Matt Shin, 4 and 3, for the most decisive decision of the day.
Ultimately, the Wildcats’ fortunes turned on a pair of matches, as Stanford pulled out a halve on the final hole of the No.5 singles match and earned a win in the final two holes of the No. 2 singles match.
Top-seeded Georgia won the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship with a 3-2-0 win over Georgia Tech. The event was contested at Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort.
This was Arizona’s final team competition of the fall. The squad will next be in action on Jan. 30-31, when the Wildcats host the PING-Arizona Intercollegiate.
