TUCSON - Jim Furyk became the first Arizona alumn to be awarded the PGA Player of the Year, as voted on by his competitors. The award caps what has been his best year as a pro.
Furyk, 40, had gone two years without winning a tournament before winning three this season. He won the Transitions Championship, Verizon Heritage and the season-ending TOUR Championship. He also won the FedExCup, a point-based competition that serves as PGA's playoffs.
His three PGA wins mark the most in one year for Furyk in his 18 years as a professional; he had two wins in 2006.
Furyk finished second in the PGA on the money list and fifth in adjusted stroke average.
