Liaw, Esway and Esler each earned individual wins vs. Purdue
TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The University of Arizona men’s golf team posted a 3-2 win over Purdue in the first round of the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship Sunday afternoon in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
Seeded eighth in the 16-team event, Arizona received wins from Henry Liaw, Travis Esway and Josh Esler to defeat ninth-seeded Purdue, 3-2. The seeding held nearly true to form, as seven of the eight higher seeds won first round matches. Thirteenth-seeded Clemson’s 3-2 win over No. 4 Kentucky was the only upset of the day.
Liaw defeated Purdue’s Brandon Larson, 4 and 3, while freshman Esway downed Pariya Junhasavasdikul, 2-up, and Esler topped Peter Richardson, 2 and 1.
Arizona’s first round victory propelled the team into a second round match with top-seeded Georgia Tech. Rains yesterday and today forced play to be suspended at 5:15 p.m. EST. Play will resume Monday at 8 a.m. EST. Through nine holes, Georgia Tech was leading in three matches, tailing in one, and all square in the other.
The Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship runs through Tuesday at the Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort’s El Campeon Course.
