TUCSON--Darrell Wyatt has been named receivers coach at the University of Arizona, head coach Mike Stoops announced today.

Wyatt spent 2006 coaching wide receivers for the Minnesota Vikings of the National Football League and was receivers coach at Oklahoma for four years, two of those overlapping with Stoops' tenure as the Sooners' defensive coordinator.

Wyatt, 40, is an 18-year coaching veteran, beginning his career at Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas, where he played two years as a wide receiver. He later earned his degree from Kansas State, where he played in 1987-88.

"Darrell brings a lot of experience, and some of that spent developing some of the best receiving corps in the country, at Wyoming and Oklahoma. His ability to work with receivers will really help the development of our new offense," Stoops said. Wyatt will work with new offensive coordinator Sonny Dykes, hired in December.

"I'm looking forward to working with coach Stoops and coach Dykes to take Arizona's offense to another level," Wyatt said. "I've seen tape of the returning players and feel we have some good receivers who will work well in our new plans."

Wyatt coached at Trinity Valley, about 60 miles southeast of Dallas, for three years after graduating from Kansas State. The 1991 team won the Texas Junior College Conference championship. He then coached for three years at Sam Houston State State before moving to Division I-A with a job as receivers coach at Wyoming in 1995, where he helped develop one of the top groups in the nation and lead Marcus Harris to All-America honors with 78 catches for 1,433 yards.

He coached at back in Texas as receivers coach at Baylor for a year in 1996, then spent four years at Kansas as receivers coach and eventually assistant head coach. He was promoted to associate head coach and offensive coordinator before leaving to join the OSU for a year in 2001. Stoops' older brother, Bob, then hired him to coach at Oklahoma, where he served as receivers coach from 2002 to 2005.

His 2004 group was led by three different headliners, with Mark Clayton leading with 66 catches for 876 yards, Travis Wilson with 11 touchdown receptions and Mark Bradley with 21.3 yards per catch. Clayton became the then career leader in both total receptions and more than 3,000 receiving yards.

A year earlier, Clayton set OU marks for single-season touchdown catches, 100-yard games, season receptions and receiving yards. The 2002 Oklahoma receivers backed up a 2,000-yard rushing attack with sure-handed support that saw four wideouts snare at least 25 catches and six score at least one touchdown.

Wyatt had served three minority coaching fellowships in the NFL before taking the job with the Vikings for the 2006 season. He was with Tampa Bay in 1996, and the Denver Broncos in both 1997 and 1998.

Among other noted players Wyatt has worked with are All-American Clayton; All-Big 12 pick and eventual pro Rashaun Woods of OSU; eventual professional Derrius Thompson of Baylor; and All-American Harris of Wyoming.

Wyatt played at Trinity College and two years at Kansas State, where he lettered in 1988. He was one of the top sprinters in the Big 12 Conference, winning a league indoor title in the 55-meter dash and a top-five finish in the 100 meters.

The Wyatt File<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt;
