Wildcat junior earns all-Pacific Region honors for third consecutive season


TUCSON, Ariz. - University of Arizona men’s golfer Henry Liaw was named to the PING all-Pacific Region team, it was announced Wednesday by the Golf Coaches Association of America.


Liaw was one of 17 student-athletes to receive the regional recognition.  Joining Liaw on the all-Pacific Region team were Benjamin Alvarado, Arizona State; Travis Bertoni, Cal Poly; Alejandro Canizares, Arizona State; Kevin Chappell, UCLA; Alex Coe, Pepperdine; Erik Flores, UCLA; Andres Gonzales, UNLV; Rob Grube, Stanford; Chris Heintz, UCLA; Daniel Im, UCLA; Niklas Lemke, Arizona State; James Lepp, Washington; Brandon Locke, Loyola Marymount; Alex Prugh, Washington; Jarred Texter, UNLV; and Taylor Wood, USC.


Liaw, a junior from Rowland Heights Calif., earned all-Pacific Region honors for the third straight season after leading the team lead with a 71.70 stroke average through 40 rounds played in 2005-06.  In 13 stroke play events this year, he has four top-10 finishes and three top-20 efforts.  To date, 22 of his 40 rounds played have been at par or better.


Also a three-time all-Pac-10 pick, Liaw has had 94.6 percent of his rounds played in team competition (35 of 37) count towards the team total.  He carded a seven-under 2209 to finish in a tie for 18th place at the 2006 NCAA West Regional on May 20.


Liaw and the rest of the Wildcat golf team will be in action, May 31-June 3, at the 2006 NCAA Men’s Golf Championships in Sunriver, Ore.  It is the program’s 20th consecutive appearance at the Championships, which is the second-longest active streak in the nation.
