Final Stats

IRVINE, Calif.- A night after junior teammate Joe Little worked seven innings of three-hit baseball Sean Rierson came back with a two-hit, complete game performance of his own as Arizona shutout UC Irvine for the second straight night, 6-0. The shutout victory improved Arizona's record to 5-3 for the season, while Irvine, which has not scored a run at home in 27 straight innings, fell to 2-4 with the loss.

Rierson, who entered the game with a 14.14 earned run average and an opponent's batting average of .500, needed just 104 pitches to put away the Anteaters on Saturday. He struck out five batters on the night, did not allow a walk and both hits came as infield singles. The complete game shutout was the second of the right-hander's career, having also shutout San Diego State, 1-0, on Feb. 7, 2002 in Tucson.

Offensively, Brian Anderson's RBI triple to right center in the fourth inning plated Derek Decater from first, paving the way for a four-run inning for the Wildcats. Arizona added three more runs on a sac-fly by Jordan Brown, a RBI double by Jeff Van Houten and a run-scoring ground out off the bat of John Hardy to give Rierson more than enough runs to complete the win.

The Wildcats tacked on lone runs in the fifth and seventh as Rierson cruised through the UCI order. The Wildcat starter did not allow a runner past first base after the first inning and retired the side in order in six of the nine frames he pitched.

The Wildcats, who assured themselves a series victory with the win on Saturday, will attempt to sweep the three-game set on Sunday as Richie Gardner will take the mound in the pitching dominated series. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. Tucson time.
