HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. ?- The Arizona women’s golf team advanced past the first round Sunday carding 4 wins to defeat UCLA during its first day of competition at the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship in Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla.
Individually, Senior Mar Garcia was victorious in the first round by scoring 1 up to defeat Hannah Jun. Junior Cassandra Kirkland defeated Vanessa Brockett 2 and 1 in her first round match. Junior Whitney Welch was also victorious against UCLA, defeating Brianna Loyear 4 and 2 in round one. Junior Lani Elston defeated Melissa Martin 5 and 4 also in the first round. UCLA’s Susie Mathews defeated senior Miriam Kraschinski 6 and 5.
Arizona advanced to face Washington in the second round later Sunday afternoon, but the round was postponed due to darkness. Before the postponement, the Wildcats were able to play through hole 10. Arizona leads Washington, 3-1-1 going into tomorrow’s completion of the second round.
The Wildcats will tee off in Monday’s completion of the second round beginning at a 9:00 a.m. (EST) shot gun start. The third round will begin one-hour after the conclusion of round two. The tournament is being played at Mission Inn Resort, El Campeon.
