TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The No. 3 softball team was shut out by No. 12 UCLA on Friday night at Hillenbrand Stadium, 6-0.
Arizona lost to UCLA earlier this season in Los Angeles, 9-1 and 5-4. The loss marked the first time since 1995 that the Bruins swept the Cats, and Arizona had won 27 of the previous 35 games entering the season.
Bruins pitcher Lisa Dodd got the win for UCLA, striking out three and allowing eight hits. Leslie Wolfe suffered her first loss of the season for the Wildcats, allowing six earned runs while striking out three.
The only run needed to beat the Wildcats came in the top of the fourth inning, when second baseman Caitlin Benyi led off with a double. Bruins catcher Emily Zaplatosch then singled down the left field line to bring Benyi home and go up on the Cats, 1-0.
Arizona will take on Washington twice on Saturday at Hillenbrand Stadium. At 3:30 p.m. the Cats will finish the final three innings of their April 15 game that was halted in Seattle doe to rain. Arizona was leading that game, 3-0, when it was postponed. Following the conclusion of that game, the Cats will take on the Huskies again at 5 p.m. in an ESPN-televised game.
