All-Access Video of Head Coach Niya Butts

With the 2009-10 season tipping off in a few weeks, the Arizona women's basketball team met with local media members to discuss the forthcoming campaign.

Head coach Niya Butts opened the session with a brief statement, then participated in an open question session that lasted approximately 20 minutes. Butts was able to provide insight into some of her new players as well as share her feelings on her second season in charge of the Arizona program.

Once Butts was finished, the Wildcat players joined the event and took turns doing 1-on-1 interviews with various media members. Many spent time in front of the camera and will be featured this evening on various local sports news shows.

Head Coach Niya Butts Quotes

Opening Statement
"Well we have a brand new team this year and we are excited to get going. It feels good to be out on the floor working with everyone finally. We were picked to finish ninth in the conference and our team obviously isn't happy about that. They'll use this as motivation during the year. But overall we're looking forward to taking the next step in our process here."

On practice so far
"It feels awfully good to see the girls working hard in practice. I'm very excited by what I've been seeing so far. We have a lot of work to do but I like the players we have. Changing the culture here has probably been one of the toughest things we've faced. It's still an on-going process and is the biggest hurdle to overcome."

Style of play this year
"We want to get out and be up-tempo this season. Last year we tried to do that somewhat but weren't very successful just because of our personnel. We'll be looking to push the ball frequently this year."

Team leaders
"Ashley Frazier is much more vocal this year than she has been in the past. She always works hard but this season she put a focus on being a vocal leader. Davellyn Whyte has also been very vocal and she is just a freshman, but she acts like a junior. It's great to have a young player like that act more like a junior and be vocal.

On Ify Ibekwe
"We want to try and keep Ify fresh this season. She carried a heavy load last year and we want to develop a lot of players under her. We're a lot more talented this year and that should make Ify a better play all around."
