Men's Golf Sits 14th at Southern Highlands

TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona men's golf team currently sits in 14th place after the first round Friday at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters in Las Vegas, Nev.

Arizona carded an 18-over-par 306 score to open play in the 54-hole event. All six UA players in the event were at least three strokes above par for the day.

Texas A&M posted a first-round 280 (-8) and leads the field by 12 strokes after the first 18 holes. Arizona State (292) is in second place, while four teams - Texas, Georgia Tech, Oklahoma State and California - are tied for third. In the tightly bunched field of 15 outside of the lead, Arizona is just five strokes out of seventh place.

Thirteen of the 15 teams in the field are ranked in the top-50 nationally in Golfstat's collegiate rankings.

Texas A&M's Jordan Russell leads the field by five strokes after pasting a eight-under 64 to open play.

The Wildcats were led by Erik Oja and John Kostis, who both carded opening-round 75s (+3) and are tied for 25th place. Juan Pablo Hernandez carded a five-over 77 and is tied for 43rd place heading into the second round.

Seniors Jonathan Khan and Tarquin MacManus are tied for 59th and 75th places, respectively after opening the tournament with a 79 (+7) and 85 (+13).

Ben Esparza, who is competing as an individual, shot an 80 (+8) in the first round and is tied for 65th place.

The Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters continues through Sunday at Southern Highlands Golf Course, a par-72, 7,510-yard layout. Live tournament scoring is available at www.golfstat.com.
