The No. 1 Arizona softball team defeated No. 3 Stanford on Friday night, 2-1, when sophomore Mackenzie Vandergeest belted a two-run homer over the left field fence in the top of the seventh inning. Arizona improved to 41-5, 8-1 in the Pac-10 while Stanford fell to 35-9.
Stanford took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Jessica Mendoza doubled to center field with one out. Mendoza scored as Sarah Beeson singled down the left field line.
Stanford remained in control until the top of the seventh inning when UA senior Jennie Finch drew a walk. Freshman Carrie Hagen came in to pinch-run for Finch. Vandergeest then smacked her home-run over the left field fence, scoring Hagen, and taking the lead for good over Stanford.
The Cardinal advanced a runner to second base in the bottom half of the final inning but would leave her stranded after a UA double play ended the game.
Arizona's Finch finished the game with five strikeouts, allowing three hits and one run. She improved to 24-1 on the season.
Arizona continues action on Saturday April 20th at California. The game is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
