TUCSON, Ariz--Mississippi State's Hayle Guess drove in all seven runs to lead the Bulldogs to a 7-1 opening-round victory over the Pacific Tigers in NCAA Softball Championships action at Hillenbrand Stadium Friday afternoon.


Guess had her first career grand slam in the third inning, a two run single in the fourth and an RBI double in the sixth to fashion a 3-for-4 day at the plate.


Kelli Miller threw shutout ball for six innings to keep UOP off balance, before the Tigers came up with a run in the top of the seventh on an RBI sing by Gina Carbonnato, who went 3-for-4 herself off Miller (18-10).


Chelsea Engle (19-16) took the loss for Pacific, which dropped to 34-23 overall and will play the loser of the Arizona-Howard game Saturday afternoon. MSU improved to 35-25 and stays in the winner's bracket to face the winner of Friday's second game at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
