Tucson, Ariz. (Sept. 7) -- The University of Arizona women's soccer team brought its 11-game winless streak to a definitive end at home on Friday, shutting out New Mexico, 3-0.
After more than 30 scoreless minutes, freshman forward Cassie Daniels broke the shutout with her first collegiate goal, a 15-yard lob over UNM goalkeeper Shelly Hammock at 33:21. With three minutes remaining in the first half, fellow freshman Vanesha Bailey made it 2-0 with her 15-yard bullet, assisted by sophomore forward Liz Bartlett. The Lobos managed to hold off the Cats for the first 24 minutes of the second period, until junior midfielder Tymarie Novak notched her first goal as a Wildcat in the 70th minute, assuring the victory for Arizona.
Bartlett tallied a game-high six shots, including four on-goal, while Daniels added four shots of her own. New Mexico's Michelle Nowfel led her team in shots, with three.
Wildcat senior goalkeeper Shannon Monti recorded four saves en route to her third career complete-game shutout, her first solo shutout since Oct. 24, 1999. Lobo goalkeepers Shelly Hammock and Kathy Graf combined for 13 saves as Arizona out-shot UNM, 27-8, for the match.
The victory ends an 11-game winless streak that dated back to Oct. 6, 2000. It was Arizona's first shutout since Sept. 30, 2000, and the three-goal margin-of-victory was the Cats' largest since a 4-1 win over Oregon State on Nov. 5, 1999. It was also Arizona's largest margin-of-victory in a shutout since a 3-0 victory at Arkansas on Aug. 30, 1997.
The Wildcats improve to 1-1-0 overall, while New Mexico slips to 0-2-1. Arizona remains at home to take on first-year program Southern Utah on Sunday, Sept. 9, at 12 p.m. at Murphey Stadium.
