Tucson, Ariz. ?- The University of Arizona women’s soccer team (11-2-0 overall, 2-0-0 pac-10) upset No. 4 Washington (9-2-1 overall, 0-1-1 pac-10) in its second pac-10 game of the season, 3-1.

The Wildcats and the Huskies battled through the first 38 minutes of the game with no score. The best opportunity for the Wildcats came in the eighteenth minute as Candice Wilks went one-on-one with the Huskies’ goalkeeper Kelsey Rasmussen. Rasmussen made the save to keep the game scoreless. Wildcat goalkeeper McCall Smith made two saves in the first half before Husky freshman Katy Dowling ended the 0-0 tie with a goal at 38:53 off of a cross from fellow freshman Colby Branham.

Junior Mallory Miller tied the game less than a minute into the second half with a goal from 15 yards out. Junior Jennifer Klein and senior Candice Wilks created the combination that led to Miller’s goal. The Wildcats took a 2-1 lead off of another goal from Miller. Miller headed a header pass from Wilks into the corner of the net past Rasmussen. Senior Kamaya Damwijk solidified the Wildcat win in the 88th minute with a goal off of a pass from Wilks.

The win marks the first time in the program’s history that the team has opened the Pac-10 season with a 2-0 record. With their sixth win at home, the Wildcats have past the previous record for most home victories in the program’s history.

Head Coach Dan Tobias discussed the Wildcats’ two comeback wins this weekend.

“It is a good way to start Pac-10 play,” Tobias explained. “In both games this weekend we were behind and in both games we came back. That shows that we have character. You can tell the team that they have character, but this proves that they do. This is a result of their character.”

The Wildcats will next be tested in their first pac-10 matches on the road.

“This is a good starting point for us,” he said. “We will prepare to go on the road next week and face two tough opponents.”

The Wildcats will travel to Palo Alto, Calif. on Friday, Oct. 15 to take on the No. 16 Stanford Cardinal at 7:30 p.m. Arizona will then travel to Berkeley, Calif. to compete against No. 11 California on Sunday, Oct. 17 at 1 p.m.
