Four players scored in double figures, but No. 6 California (21-2, 11-1) squeaked by Arizona women’s basketball (11-12, 3-9), 91-86, at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, Calif. on Sunday.

Senior Davellyn Whyte (Phoenix, Ariz.) led the charge with a season-high 26 points. She also added seven rebounds and eight assists.

Kama Griffitts (Coeur d’Alene, Idaho) scored 21 points, while juniors Erica Barnes (Sacramento, Calif.) added 14 each.

Junior Carissa Crutchfield (Ft. Gibson, Okla.) added nine points and four assists.

As a team, the Wildcats shot 91 percent from the free throw line (20-of-22) and outscored the Golden Bears’ bench, 16-8.

“We are disappointed, but I thought we battled,” Arizona head coach Niya Butts said. “We fought for 40 minutes. This was one of our better games, in terms of a complete game.”

In the first half, the Golden Bears and Wildcats stayed close until Cal went on a 13-2 run to extend its lead to 29-19, but Arizona stayed close and the Bears never led by more than 10 in the half. Six lead changes, two ties and a Cal three-pointer at the buzzer gave the Bears a 52-43 lead going into halftime.

The second half was physical and the teams played evenly until Arizona went on a 6-0 run and narrowed the score to within four. The Bears responded, however, and extended their lead to 73-56. The Wildcats did not quit, outscoring Cal, 25-15 in the last 10 minutes, but it was not enough and Arizona fell, 91-86.

“It is a tough way to lose, but I feel good about us moving forward,” Butts said. “If we play like this, we are going to win more than we lose.”

Junior Gennifer Brandon and senior Talia Caldwell led the Bears with 22 points and 14 rebounds and 20 points and 12 rebounds, respectively.

The Wildcats will return home to host No. 21 Colorado on Friday, Feb. 15 and Utah on Sunday, Feb. 17.
