Arizona Head Coach Lute Olson Quotes:

“In terms of getting the ball inside more and creating openings, we did very well and we got 35 shot attempts by our four and five men who shot over 50 percent.”

“The other great stat to look at is Hassan (Adams) with nine assists, which is his high since he’s been here, and only three turnovers. Mustafa Shakur had seven assists and two turnovers. Between those two guys, they did a really good job of finding the open man.”

“I thought Daniel Dillon did a great job for us. He came in and we can always count on him for a big time defensive drive. He only missed one of his shots and had three rebounds. I though he played outstandingly.”

Fendi Onobun came in and finally got some extended time. He did a great job on the glass and you can see how strong he is and how strong his hands are. I though he created a big lift for us.”

Ivan Radenovic was outstanding throughout the game. Ivan is feeling much more comfortable now in the leadership role. He has a great basketball IQ and he is communicating with the guys on the court. If there is something he sees, he’ll point it out. That has been so apparent to us. It’s not only how he’s playing, but the kind of job he’s doing as a leader.”

“Today was a huge difference for us in terms of the number of positions we had compared to Oregon State. We had 10 more offensive rebounds and 12 less turnovers, so we are talking about a difference of 22 positions.  And for OSU to be able to recover from that would have been pretty difficult.”

“In the first half, the biggest problem we had was Sasa Cuic, he was breaking out early from the defensive end. Whenever that happens it’s not the responsibility of the guy that’s guarding him, but the guard protecting the basket area. I think we gave five or six buckets in the first half and in the second half they didn’t get a run on us. Our guards adjusted well.”

“I think we were more aggressive putting pressure on the ball. When we are not effective defensively it is because we are letting people run their shots. This afternoon we made it difficult for them to get what they want. Good defense starts with pressure on the ball and we did a much better job today with that.”

“Kirk (Walters) is doing a much better job protecting the basket. It is not the number of blocks he has, but the number of shots he is changing. He gets in foul trouble because he tries to bock the ball and not stop the shooter. If we can do that, we will be able to keep the ball in play for the chance for the fast break.”

“Today was an opportunity to use more guys. The reserves work just as hard as the starters and it’s nice when we can get in a position for the guys to show what they can really do.”

“It’s critical to have momentum (for next week). The crowd was unbelievable again. We forget how critical the crowd is to our game on the road. We now need to get the job done on the road.”

Junior F Ivan Radenovic

“We were getting everyone involved. We knocked down our first few shots and got our confidence up. After that, we just had to take care of business.”

“I’ve been trying to mix it up. I can score inside and out and off the dribble. It depends a lot on who is guarding me. With [Nick] DeWitz, he is shorter than I am so I tried to take him inside more, but I could also take him to the basket from the outside.”

“We just need to have a killer instinct. I think we showed that in the second half. I personally think the key is our defense. We played harder on defense today.”

“I knocked down my first two shots. It gave me confidence the rest of the game.”

Sophomore G Daniel Dillon

“This team has always had a lot of heart. We had been in a bit of a slump and it’s hard to get out of a slump sometimes. Hassan [Adams] really tried to pump us up before and during the game. He got us ready. That is the leadership we need. Everyone has the heart, but it really showed today.”

“This definitely gives us a lot of confidence. It was definitely a must-win game for us. We needed to break out of this slump and get some momentum. We need to keep this momentum to finish the season strong.”

“Coach [Olson] is always telling us that we will be better than last year’s team. If we keep improving and playing hard we will be better. We need to keep working hard and getting better in practice.”

On the improvement of junior center Kirk Walters:

“Kirk has been a big presence inside. He’s been working really hard and improving every day. He’s been blocking a lot of shots, getting dunks and rebounding. His improvement has made us a better team.”

Freshman F/G Marcus Williams

On the improved inside play of Ivan Radenovic and Kirk Walters:

“[Their inside play] has definitely helped to collapse the defenses. Not only are they scoring more, but it’s opening everyone up outside and giving us wide-open shots. The defense has to scramble when that happens and we’ve been making the extra pass.”

On closing the game out before the final moments:

“It feels good to be able to win a game like this. It was nice to see [David] Bagga get in there. He hasn’t been able to play in quite a while. The coaches have really been stepping on people’s throats lately trying to get us to play tougher. We did that a lot more tonight. It’s time to start playing like this every game.”

“I personally wanted to pick up my defensive intensity. I don’t think I had been playing as intense as I could on defense. As a team, we really wanted to get into their guards. We are more athletic than they are and have more athletes. Their strength is inside, and we wanted to make it tough on them from the outside. We pressured their guards and made it difficult to get the ball inside.”

On the performance by Ivan Radenovic:

He’s a very versitle player. He can play inside, but can also take a guy off the dribble. He had a great game. I think he scored like 10 of his points off assists from Hassan [Adams]. We really moved the ball well as a team today.”

Freshman F Fendi Onobun

“All the guys were comfortable tonight and worked hard. We have had a big inside presence the last two games with Kirk’s [Walters] game on Thursday and Ivan’s [Radenovic] today. We’re playing beter inside and out. That’s what we need to do to be successful.”

“We know the players we have on this team and we know the type of team that we can be. We just need to bring it together and play tough every game. This is a big step for us heading into next week.”

“Coach [Olson] really emphasized patience on the offensive end for us. We wanted to make two or more passes each possession even if it was in transition. We made the extra pass tonight and it paid off.”

Senior G/F Hassan Adams

“I wanted to get my teammates involved. Guys were doing a great job of getting open and I made the passes I needed to.”

“This team has a lot of heart, we just need to play a full game. I don’t think we played a full game today, but it was better. We need to put together a full 40 minutes. It’s coming soon.”
