TUCSON, Ariz. - The Arizona softball team was defeated by Pima College on Sunday in the final game of the Arizona Fall Classic tournament. Pima's 2-0 shutout of the Wildcats followed Arizona's 8-0, five-inning shutout of the Hum-Babe Cats.
Sophomore pitcher Alicia Hollowell pitched two innings versus Hum-Babe, striking out all six batters she faced. Senior Wendy Allen relieved Hollowell in the third inning, allowing no runs on two hits and striking out six.
Junior Jackie Coburn hit a grand slam in the first inning to put the Cats up 5-0. Freshman shortstop Kristie Fox hit her first homer of the tournament in the third inning, a three-run shot that gave Arizona an eight-run lead.
In the final game of the Fall Classic, Hollowell turned in a strong pitching performance, striking out 14 batters in seven innings and allowing three hits.
The game stayed scoreless until the top of the sixth, when Pima scored a pair of runs on three hits. Sophomore Autumn Champion laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners, but the Cats failed to score in the inning.
