Head Coach Joan Bonvicini: “UCLA is a great basketball team, but we showed a lot of character tonight.”

“(Shawntinice) Polk is struggling with an injury and so is Jessica Arnold. Ashley (Whisonant) was great off the bench as one of our top scorers and I really pushed Natalie (Jones) tonight and she ended up having a career high. Everyone put in a great team effort.”

“When they were up at the beginning of the first half, the first thing to do was not to panic. We were clearly getting out-rebounded and so we knew we needed to step up. We did that and at halftime we were leading.”

“Dee-Dee (Wheeler) was a great leader on the court tonight.”

“I am just glad this game is over and I’m really glad that we won. This was a pretty big win and from here we have to take it one game at a time.”

Freshman guard Ashley Whisonant: “We just played our game. Our guards and posts came to play hard and did very well.”

“When I come in, I just want to work hard and play good defense ?- stepping it up and try to be my best.”

“We can play as a team with or without a player.”

Senior guard Dee-Dee Wheeler: “I think we know UCLA is a good team and will go on runs. We just wanted to stay ahead at halftime.”

“We talked about how our win at UCLA was a turning point in our season. We needed to use this game as another turning point.”

“Pokey isn’t 100 percent. I don’t even think she’s 30 percent. But we have other people that are stepping up. Danielle [Adefeso] is coming in a getting rebounds and some good buckets. Shannon isn’t 100 percent either, but hopefully by the Pac-10 tournament they can both be healthy.”

“Lisa Willis is a great shooter. When you have great guards, the game isn’t over.”

Junior guard Natalie Jones: “Coach challenged me today. I have had meetings with the coaches and they all said I needed to become a threat. Coach Barney told me when teams are scouting, they will begin to step off of me and that is when I should become a threat. I’ve been having these meetings and they’ve said the same thing so I am at the point where I have to step up.”

“You need to take that pressure off of them [Polk and Hobson]. I don’t know what kind of pain they are in, but I do know how hard it is to play in pain. It’s just going to take time.”

“This win helped our confidence. That will be great going into the USC game. USC is second in the Pac-10 and beating them would be a good win.”
