Arizona vs. Washington State

Dec. 29, 2005

Post-Game Quotes

Arizona Head Coach Joan Bonvicini: “It all started with our practice. We knew that we needed to be tougher in practice so that we would be better prepared for our games. We needed to be tougher mentally and physically. We knew this was going to be an ugly game.”

“Thirty-five turnovers is an amazing number. The turning point in the game was when we went to the zone defense. It allowed us to get steals and create opportunities for easy lay-ups. It really opened up the game.”

“Malia O’Neal will be a very good player for us. She is still making freshman mistakes. She is a great point guard and she is also very good on defense.”

“We got frustrated early because we couldn’t get shots to go down. I think when Joy hit those threes, she really helped the team get going. She’s had really good practices and that’s made a difference.”

“Washington State has really improved from the last couple of seasons. They are a good rebounding team. We need to get better on the boards.”

“I think we need to build on this victory. We will come out ready for Washington on Saturday.”

Sophomore guard Ashley Whisonant: “It [first half] wasn’t really frustrating, we were just tired, I think. We didn’t have as much energy as we did in the second half. I think we won based on talent.”

On coming off the bench

“Coming home [from winter break], I missed my first flight. I missed Tuesday’s practice and then the first practice yesterday. It most definitely felt different. I got to see what was going on and got to see what I had to do. It felt different. I was used to it, though, from last year.”

“I think we got more energy in the second half. Everyone was focused. We got down and played defense. We went to our 2-3 zone and got steals and lay-ups.”

“Joy stepped up big time. She was in a slump. The thing is she has to stay confident. If she’s confident, she shoots well.”

“After the loss to ASU, Coach basically told us we had to be a new team. Everything is different now in practice. I’ve only been to one practice, but things were different. We have to stay more energized and accountable even during stretching.

Junior guard Joy Hollingsworth: “I just tried to get open. My teammates set good screens to get me open and I moved without the ball.”

“I was more confident. I felt a lot more confidence tonight and I don’t know why. I will continue this throughout the season.”

“I tried to bring energy. When the team is struggling, you do anything you can to help the team.”

“This is very big for us. Coach B. said we needed to get back on track. This was the first step. Washington is the second step. We have to take it one game at a time. This is a confidence builder.”

Washington State Head Coach Sherri Murrell: “This was the worst that we have ever played. We lost our best ball-handler in the first half. Whenever we had the ball, we turned it over. In the second half, all the kids lost hope. There was not enough pressure. Thirty-five turnovers is unacceptable.”
