Swim and Dive Dual in the Pool vs. ASU

This Week in the Pool ?- The No. 4 Arizona women’s and the No. 5 men’s swimming and diving teams are set to host their final dual-meet of the season Saturday, Feb. 3 against intrastate rival Arizona State. Competition will begin at 1 p.m. (MST) at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center.

 

A Look at the Opponents?- The women will take on the No. 23 Sun Devils, who currently post a record of 4-5 (1-4 Pac-10). ASU’s last competition on Jan. 12 and 13 ended in a double loss for the women, as they fell to Cal 194-99 and to top-ranked Stanford 170-122.

 

            The men will be competing against No. 21 ASU, who currently post an overall record of 2-6 (0-3 Pac-10). The Sun Devils’ last competition against No. 2 Stanford ended in a 169-129 loss; however ASU won eight of 16 events during the meet.

 

Arizona/ASU History ?- In the past seven years, the Wildcats have posted a remarkable record against the Sun Devils. The women’s team remains undefeated since 2000 (7-0) and is hoping for yet another victory against ASU on Saturday. The men’s team is 5-2 against the Sun Devils, last losing to the intrastate rival in 2002 with ASU downing Arizona 171.5 - 128.5.

 

A look at the Wildcats ?- The Wildcats completed their last dual meet on the road on Jan. 20 against Texas and SMU. The women’s team defeated its southern rivals improving its record to 7-2 (3-2 Pac-10), however the Wildcats took a hit in the most recent CSCAA Coaches Poll falling from a No. 2 ranking to No. 4. The men split their meet against the Texas schools and continue to hold on to the No. 5 position in the national poll with a record of 5-3 (2-2 Pac-10).

 

What Happened Last Year ?- On Saturday, Feb. 12, 2006, the No. 6 women’s and No. 7 men’s teams completed their 2005-06 dual meet season against ASU. The women won 12 of 16 events, downing the Sun Devils 181-107, while the men won 11 of 16 events to defeat ASU 172-123.

 

Arizona’s Last Time in the Water ?-Arizona completed a two-day competition against Texas and Southern Methodist Saturday, Jan. 20 in Austin, Texas. The women downed the eighth-ranked Mustangs 235-116 and the No. 12 Longhorns 213-139, while the men defeated SMU 145-104 and fell to No. 1 Texas 165-188. The women won 12 of 19 events over the course of two days, while the men won nine of 19 events.

 


Incredible Individuals ?- In the latest NCAA top-times list, several Wildcats have made their mark, as a total of 12 different swimmers appear in the top-five of 19 individual events.

Ranked Relays - According to the NCAA top-times list, the Arizona men are ranked No. 1 in four of five relay events. The Wildcats posted each of the top-times at the 2006 Texas Invitational last December, as Arizona swam in all but one relay at the meet (the 800 free relay), which is also the only relay event where it does not post a national ranking. The women’s squad is No. 1 in three of five relay events, respectively, posting a No. 2 ranking in the 400 medley relay that is only three tenths of a second away from the No. 1 position held by Stanford.

Arizona’s Next Action ?- The women’s swim team will travel to Long Beach, Calif. On Feb 14-17, while the men’s and women’s diving teams will travel to Seattle, Wash. to compete at the 2007 Pac-10 Championships. The men’s swim team will compete at the conference championships on Feb. 21-24.
