TUCSON, Ariz. - The No. 19 Arizona women's tennis team was defeated by No. 10 Arizona State on Sunday morning, eliminating Arizona from the NCAA Tourney. Arizona State swept the doubles matches and won the first three singles matches to earn the victory over the Wildcats, 4-0.
UA's No. 9 doubles duo of freshman Maja Mlakar and sophomore Debbie Larocque fell to ASU's No. 11 team of Adria Engel and Dora Krstulovic, 8-2. Wildcat senior Laresa Marino and freshman Marie-Pier Pouliot were topped by ASU's Mhairi Brown and Cindy Sureephong, 8-4.
In singles play, UA's No. 59th ranked Larocque was tripped up by ASU's 27th ranked Krstulovic, 6-2, 6-2. Arizona sophomore Perrine Pernin lost to ASU's Sureephong in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. UA's Pouliot was topped by ASU's Lauren Colalillo, 6-3, 7-5. The matches played by Arizona's Mlakar, freshman Dianne Hollands and Marino did not finish because ASU had already earned four points to clinch the victory.
Arizona completed the 2002 season with a 12-11 record, 4-4 in the Pac-10. UA's Mlakar and Larocque will continue action at the NCAA singles and doubles tournaments May 20-21. Mlakar will be playing in the singles competition and she will team up with Larocque for the doubles tournament.
