 Lashley cards four-under 66 and stands in a tie for second place


TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The University of Arizona men’s golf team opened play at the NCAA West Regional with a three-over 283 and stands in fourth place Thursday in Stanford, Calif.


The Wildcats got off to a solid start at the regional with a three-over 283 to stand in fourth place after the first 18 holes.  Brigham Young leads the 27-team filed with a two-under 278 (-2).  Pepperdine (279), UNLV (281) and New Mexico (284) round out the top five places.


Arizona’s first-round 283 was a 14-stroke improvement over the team’s first-round effort in its last appearance at the Stanford University Golf Course at the U.S. Collegiate Championships on April 15.


Senior Nathan Lashley continues to play outstanding golf for the Wildcats, as he currently sits in a tie for second place after a first-round 66 (-4).  Four of his last five rounds have been in the 60s and his stroke average in that span is 68.60.  He finished as the runner-up at the 2005 Pac-10 Championships with a seven-under 277 in his last outing.


Brigham Young’s Oscar Alvarez leads the 141-man field by three strokes after carding a seven-under 63.


UA sophomore Henry Liaw finds himself in a tie for 19th place after a one-over 71.  Teammate Josh Esler is one stroke behind Liaw in a tie for 34th place.


Senior Kipp Riehle is tied for 70th place with a four-over 74, while freshman Travis Esway is tied for 90th place at five-over 75.


The 54-hole 2005 NCAA West Regional continues through Saturday at the Stanford University Golf Course, a par 70, 6,742-yard layout.  The top 10 finishing teams will advance to the 2005 NCAA Championships, June 1-4, in Owings Mills, Md..
