TUCSON, Ariz. ?- University of Arizona gymnastics head coach Bill Ryden today announced that Colleen Fisher has signed a National Letter-of-Intent to enroll at the school in the fall of 2007.

Fisher, 5-3 senior at Vista Murrieta High School in Murrieta, Calif., was the 2005 Junior Olympic national all-around champion. She was also a 2005 region floor champion, and a state beam champion in 2003 and 2005.

“Colleen is a very talented gymnast,” Ryden said. “We feel she was one of the top recruits in the country. Her past honors speak for themselves. We feel very fortunate that she took such great interest in our program.”

Fisher, who plans to study molecular biology and photo journalism at Arizona, is a complete all-around gymnast. She will immediately add quality depth to all four events upon her arrival in the fall of 2007.

“She is very strong on beam and floor,” Ryden added. “She is a true all-arounder. What caught my eye about her is that she is has no glaring weaknesses. I know for a fact that our team will be stronger with her competing for us.”

Fisher becomes the first gymnast from the state of California to sign with the Wildcats since Monica Bisordi, the school’s all-time leading scorer, who competed from 2002-2005.

“In Region I where she competes, there are a lot of great gymnasts,” said Ryden. “It will be nice for her to be close enough to home so that her parents can see her compete. She will already have a fan base out here.”

The Arizona coaching staff has one remaining scholarship available, but will continue to evaluate recruits before deciding whether to offer the scholarship in the spring signing period.

“Colleen gives us a great base,” Ryden said. “If we can find a quality athlete that can come in and make an immediate impact, then we will go for it.”

Arizona begins its 2007 season on January 14, 2007, at Michigan State.
