Closing in on 1,000

Arizona’s 12 home wins this season has pushed the Cats’ record to 998-445-4 all-time at Jerry Kindall Field at Frank Sancet Stadium. UA needs just two more victories at the facility to make it an even 1,000 since putting down roots at the site in 1967. The earliest that Arizona could reach the milestone home win would be Saturday vs. Northern Colorado.

A Quick Look at Northern Colorado

The Bears head to Tucson with a 7-10 overall record ... NCU most recently split a double-header with Kansas, dropping the opener of the twin-bill 5-4 before rallying to win the finale, 4-2 ... As a team, the Bears are hitting .247 and averaging 5.7 runs, 8.6 hits and 5.2 RBI per game this year ... Individually, outfielder Zach Brockman paces the club with a .381 average in 11 games played. The scheduled rotation for the weekend is RHP Chris Reap on Friday, RHP Jason Banks on Saturday and the Sunday starter TBA ... Head coach Kevin Smallcomb is in his fifth year at NCU and has posted a 113-118 record there.

Arizona vs. Northern Colorado - The History

The Wildcats and Bears have met 35 times on the baseball diamond dating back to 1954 ... UA owns a 32-3 edge in the all-time series and swept a three-game series in 2005, the most recent meeting between the two schools ... Although Arizona has dominated the all-time series, Northern Colorado took down what is perhaps the best team in UA history when it defeated the Wildcats 6-5 and 6-2 in the 1974 District 7 Regional of NCAA postseason play. The ?'74 Wildcats ended the regular season with school-best 58-4 overall record, but in dropping the two games to the Bears saw thier season come an abrupt end.

Hard Working Guys

Four different Wildcats have started all 24 games this season - Sr. Bill Rhinehart, So. Brad Glenn, Jr. C.J. Ziegler and Fr. Robert Abel. Last year Colt Sedbrook was the only UA player to have made 24 straight starts to open the year, and was the only UA player to start all 55 games.

Offensive Numbers

Heading into play this weekend, the Wildcats are batting .302 as a team and averaging 7.0 runs, 10.2 hits, 2.2 doubles and 6.2 RBI per game.

Looking For Some O

After opening the season on a tear, the Wildcat offense has sputtered a bit of late. Save for a 16-hit, 19-run outburst against Hawaii-Hilo on March 13, Arizona has been held to single digit hits and runs in five of its last six games, including a season-low three hits in a shutout loss at Hawaii on March 10. Despite the lack of offensive punch, UA has done enough to win games by going 5-1 over the six-game stretch, including a current win streak of four straight.

Manufacturing, Inc.

Even without a multitude of hits over the last six games Arizona has still done an outstanding job of manufacturing runs. Dating back to the opening game of the Hawaii series on March 10, UA has scored 17 of its 36 runs without the aid of a hit on the play in which the run was scored. The Cats have crossed home plate five times on wild pitches, four times on sacrifice flies, twice on errors and walks and once each on a ground out, a double steal, a HBP and a balk. During the six-game stretch, Arizona has drawn 28 walks, advanced four runners via a sac bunt and is 14 for 16 in stolen bases.

Winning the Close Ones

Arizona is 6-0 in games decided by one run this season.

Now That’s Getting it Done

The last 10 times Diallo Fon has safely reached base he has come around to score a run for the Wildcats, including a stretch of eight straight plate appearances over two games. Dating back to his final four ABs on March 13 at Hawaii-Hilo, Fon has collected six hits, including a pair of triples, walked three times and been hit by one pitch and scored every single time. Against Morehead State on Tuesday, the redshirt freshman transfer from Vanderbilt matched the Eagles’ four runs in the game all by himself. During the three-game stretch he is hitting a team-best .500 (6 for 12) with three stolen bases.

The Cats in the Pac

Heading into the week of play, Arizona remained among the conference leaders in a number of offensive categories. Excluding any midweek games played by Pac-10 teams, UA is first in triples (15) and HBP (36), second in batting average (.306), slugging (.485), home runs (19) and total bases (365) and third in runs scored (157), RBI (137), doubles (48) and stolen bases (31) ... Individually, Bill Rhinehart is seventh among conference players in batting average (.378) ... C.J. Ziegler dots the Pac-10 top 10 in slugging (3rd, .711), runs scored (7th, 25), RBI (6th, 25), doubles (3rd, 9), home runs (t1st, 7) and total bases (t5th, 59).... Brad Glenn is fifth in the Pac in RBI with 27 for the year and freshman Robert Abel is the top thief in the conference with 11 stolen bases.

Touch ?'Em All

The Wildcats have hit 19 home runs in 24 games thus far. The middle part of the batting order - Bill Rhinehart (4 HR), C.J. Ziegler (7) and Brad Glenn (5) - have accounted for 16 of the 19 bombs, while Jon Gaston (2) and T.J. Steele (1) have added the other three. Last year it took UA 38 games to hit 19 home runs.

Needing That Triple

DH C.J. Ziegler has three times this year fallen a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. The junior went single, double and home run twice against New Mexico back in February and most recently hit a single, two doubles and a home run in a game against Hawaii-Hilo on March 13. Despite missing out on the 12th cycle in school history, Ziegler’s power credentials are still impressive. With 10 doubles and seven home runs, both team-highs, over half of his 30 hits this year are for two or more bases (17 of 30, 57%).

Two-Out Guy

Brad Glenn has racked up a team-best 29 RBI in 24 games this season. More impressive however is that 20 of the 29 runs driven in have come with two outs in an inning. For the year, Glenn is batting .415 with two outs, 63 points higher than his overall average of .352.

Abel to Steal a Bag

Freshman shortstop Robert Abel is 11 for 11 in stolen base tries this season to pace an Arizona club that is 39 for 47 on the year (83%). Along with Abel, T.J. Steele (5 for 5), Diallo Fon (3 for 3) and Brad Glenn (4 for 4) are perfect for the year, while Bill Rhinehart (5 for 6), Colt Sedbrook (2 for 3) and Jon Gaston (3 for 4) have each been caught only once.

Back-To-Back Back-To-Back

C.J. Ziegler and Brad Glenn hit back-to-back home runs in back-to-back games earlier this season. Ziegler led off the ninth inning against Arizona State on Feb. 27 with a solo homer and was followed around the bases by Glenn in the next at bat. The duo repeated the feat three days later in the third inning against Eastern Michigan.

A year removed from having just one player hit multiple home runs in a contest (David Plante, at USC), three different Wildcats have gone yard at least twice in a game this season. Bill Rhinehart (2) and Brad Glenn (3) each hit multiple homers against Utah Valley State on Feb. 7, and C.J. Ziegler joined them on March 2 against Eastern Michigan with a pair of solo shots. It was the first multi-homer game for each player in their respective UA career ... The team record for multi-homer games in a single season is nine by the 1993 Wildcat squad ... The individual career record is 10 by Shelley Duncan (199-2001).

One Yard from History

Brad Glenn was already having a good day - 3 for 3, three home runs - when he strode to plate in the eighth inning against Utah Valley State on Feb. 7. Little did he know that he was about to come 36 inches shy of doing something nobody in over 100 years of Arizona baseball had done. The sophomore outfielder lined a 1-2 offering towards the gap in left-center and the ball smacked the outfield fence just three feet short of going over for what would have been his record-breaking fourth bomb of the game. Despite coming up a yard short of the record, Glenn tied four other former Wildcats for the most HRs in a single game in school history

Three-Homer Games at Arizona

April 7, 1972 - Dennis Haines at UTEP - 5-for-5, 4 R, 2B, 3 HRs, 3 RBI

March 20, 1974 - Ron Hassey vs. Weber State - 4-for-4, 4 R, 2B, 3 HR, 7 RBI

April 8, 2000 - Erik Torres at Washington - 3-for-4, 4 R, 3 HR, 3 RBI

Feb. 23, 2001 - Shelley Duncan vs. Utah - 4-for-4, 4 R, 3 HR, 4 RBI

Feb. 7, 2007 - Brad Glenn vs. Utah Valley State - 4-for-4, 3 R, 2B, 3 HR, HBP, 5 RBI

Only Hassey and Duncan hit their HRs in consecutive ABs

Extra, Extra

In 24 games this season Arizona has posted at least one extra base hit in 23 of them ... UA has hit at least one double in 22 of 24 contests this season, including a season-high eight in the season-opener against Gonzaga ... The Wildcats hit eight doubles, three triples and a home run against Gonzaga on Feb. 2. The 12 extra base hits in that contest were the most put up by a UA squad in school history, eclipsing the previous high-water mark of 11 set by the 1985 and 2001 teams ... Junior DH C.J. Ziegler tied the UA single-game school record for doubles in his first career start on Feb. 2, swatting three two-baggers. He finished the contest 4 for 5 with three RBI and four runs scored.

Wearing It

Although they are behind last year’s record-setting pace, the Cats have been hit by 36 pitches in 22 games thus far. The opposition has hit Arizona batters six times in a contest this season and the Cats have been dosed at least once in 15 of 24 games thus far. Led by a single-season record 26 HBP by Colt Sedbrook, Arizona shattered the school record for getting hit last season with 96. The 2006 club had been hit by 44 pitches 24 games into the season.

Glenn Named Pac-10 Player of the Week

Sophomore Brad Glenn was named the Feb. 13 Pac-10 Player of the Week by the conference office. In UA’s five games vs. Utah Valley State and New Mexico, the UA outfielder went 9-for-17 (.529) with a double, three home runs (all in one game), eight RBI and four runs scored. He finished the week with a 1.118 slugging percentage and also drew two walks and was hit by four pitches to help lead to a .652 on base percentage.

Pitching Numbers

The Arizona pitching staff is 18-6 this season with eight saves in 213 innings pitched ... Opponents are batting just .261 against them with a lowly .350 slugging percentage ... The Arizona arms have recorded 225 Ks this year against just 87 walks.
