Riehle claims individual medalist honors at seven-under 206
TUCSON, Ariz. ?- A trio of University of Arizona men’s golfers occupied the top three spots on the leaderboard Saturday, finishing first, second and tied fro third at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational in Tempe, Ariz.
Senior Kipp Riehle shot a final-round 68 (-3) to finish the 54-hole event with a seven-under 206 total and win by six strokes over teammate Nathan Lashley. Fellow Wildcat Henry Liaw carded a final round 72 (+1) and finished in a three-way tied for third place at 213 (E).
It was the first career victory for Riehle and the 59th time in school history that a Wildcat has claimed individual medalist honors. A native of Phoenix, Ariz., Riehle matched his career low tournament total, originally set April 11-12, 2003, at the same ASU Thunderbird Invitational where he tied for 17th place.
Riehle is the first UA varsity player to claim individual medalist honors this season. Freshman Trey Denton won the Ron Moore Invitational, Sept. 27-28, in Brighton, Colo., with a 12-under 204 total for the Arizona junior varsity. Arizona last individual medalist in varsity competition was Chris Nallen at the 2004 NCAA West Regional. Riehle is also the first UA golfer to claim individual medalist honors in the 33-year history of the ASU Thunderbird Invitational
The 1-2-3 finish wasn’t quite enough to move the Wildcats up in the standings, as Riehle was competing as an individual. Lashley and Liaw were the only members of the UA varsity to finish at par or better in the field. Arizona’s 54-hole total of 869 (+17) placed the team in a tie for third with Arizona State. UNLV topped the 15-team field by two strokes with a 859 (+7) total. Pepperdine (861) and UCLA (873) rounded out the top five places.
Also competing for the Wildcats was senior Nick Juszczak, who tied for 37th place at 10-over 223. Sophomore Josh Esler tied for 47th place at 12-over 225. Freshman Travis Esway tied for 51st place at 226 (+13).
The 54-hole ASU Thunderbird Invitational was contested at the Karsten Golf Course, a par 71, 7,025-yard layout. Arizona will next be in action on April 15-16 at the U.S. Collegiate Championships in Palo Alto, Calif.
