No. 6-ranked Washington blasted past Arkansas with four home runs in the opening game of Arizona's Pepsi Softball Classic, a contest halted more than 90 minutes by rain.
Jaime Clark's two-out home run in the first gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead. Arkansas loaded the bases with two hits and a walk in the bottom of the inning, but UW shortstop turned a double play on Kim Eiben's ground ball to end the threat.
Washington added three runs on four hits in the second, with runs batted in by Amy Hanson and Megan Owen, and another crossing the plate on a fielding error, then sent 10 batters to the plate in a six-run third, highlighted by back-to-back home runs by Kathy Fiske and Sarah Hyatt. Kristen Rivera homered to lead off the UW fourth.
The rest of the schedule for the tournament will be altered due to weather conditions, with Arizona scheduled to play Minnesota today at 7 p.m. in its only contest of the day.
Play Friday was suspended in the fifth inning of Game 2, with Washington leading Florida International 5-0, because of a thunderstorm. The schedule will be a play-it-by-ear style Saturday and Sunday.
