TUCSON--Reliever Jenny Wheeler earned a save in the bottom of the seventh, cutting short a San Jose State rally to help Cal State Northridge beat the Spartans, 4-1, on day two of Arizona's round-robin Worth Invitational softball tournament.
Northridge took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Janine Grund and Joey Metz singled and, with two outs, Christen Bedwell lined a hit off pitcher Brianne Ferguson's glove to score Grund from second base.
Lindsay Sheehan doubled in a run, and Colleen Spencer hit a two-run single to push the lead to 4-0 in the fifth.
San Jose State loaded the bases for the second time in the seventh, and
pushed across a run with Becca Baldridge's infield grounder. But Wheeler
got a fly out from Veronica Ramos to end the game. The Spartans (5-9) stranded
nine runners in the game and are 0-3 in the tournament. Cal State
Northridge (10-8) improved to 2-1 in the tourney.
