Athens, Ga. ?- The No. 4 Arizona women’s swimming and diving team completed the first round of NCAA Championship preliminary action this afternoon at the Gabrielsen Natatorium in Athens, Ga. qualifying seven athletes in four different events for finals competition tonight beginning at 7 p.m. (EST).
Starting off the action was the 200 free relay team of sophomore Courtney Cashion, sophomore Lacey Nymeyer, freshman Anna Turner and freshman Lindsey Kelly who finished second with time of 1:28.87 behind No. 1 seeded Georgia (1:28.74).
Junior Whitney Myers posted a No. 1 seed for tonight’s finals in the 200 individual medley, winning the race with a time of 1:57.19.
Nymeyer also set a new school record in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.20, which was previously set in 1998 by Shannon Hosack with a time of 22.25. Cashion and senior Jenna Gresdal finished fourth and sixth, qualifying them for the championship finals of the race as well, while Turner finished 15th overall with a personal best time of 22.81, qualifying her for the consolation finals.
In the final swimming event, Gresdal, senior Erin Sieper, Myers and Baughman swam the 400 medley relay in a time of 3:37.1, giving them the No. 3 seed going into tonight’s finals.
In the diving well, senior Tiffany Manning finished sixth overall in the 1-meter prelims with 293 points, qualifying her to compete in finals action.
