LOS ANGELES, Calif.- The Arizona volleyball team is headed to San Diego. The Wildcats, down 12-9 in the fifth game, rattled off six unanswered points to defeat Pac-10 rival Southern California on its home floor, 3-2, Friday night. The victory advances Arizona to its first ever trip to the NCAA Final Four. Game scores of the hard fought match were 25-30, 30-24, 30-24, 28-30, 15-12. Senior setter Dana Burkholder was named the Region II Most Valuable Player and classmate Jill Talbot took home the second consecutive All-Region honors of her career.
Arizona started out sluggish in the first game, battled to take the momentum of the match in the second and third frames, only to lose it to the Women of Troy in the fourth and most of the fifth. However, the focused and determined Cats refused to lose and found the empty spots on the floor when it mattered most.
Down by three points at 12-9 in the fifth and final game, Lisa Rutledge served six consecutive times, scoring one ace, Jill Talbot tallied two kills, USC committed two attack errors and Shannon Torregrosa capped the 6-0 Wildcat run and put the match away with an untouchable kill down the center of the court.
