Whitney Myers Named Honda Award Finalist

The Collegiate Women Sports Awards has announced that UA swimmer Whitney Myers is a finalist for the 2005-2006 Swimming and Diving Honda Sports Award to determine the top woman collegiate athlete in that sport.  The winner after nationwide balloting will become a nominee for The Honda-Broderick Cup awarded annually to the nation's outstanding collegiate woman athlete of the year.

Myers, a junior from Oxford, Ohio,  was a two-time individual champion in the NCAA Championships last week, and also was part of two championship relay teams and finished second and third in two other individual events. She won the 400 and 200 Individual medleys and was part of Arizona's 400 Free relay that set U.S. Open, NCAA, pool and school records at the meet.

      2005-2006 Swimming & Diving Honda Sports Award Nominees:

       Mary DeScenza          University of Georgia

         Blythe Hartley            University of Southern California

         Kara Lynn Joyce       University of Georgia                   

         Whitney Myers          University of Arizona

 In addition to the honor of this selection, American Honda will donate $1,000 to the women’s athletic fund of each nominee’s university.  The winner’s program will receive $5,000.

 The ballot will be sent to all NCAA senior women administrators this week with the winner to be announced at the end of the month.
