Cats Open 2008 Season at Home, then on the Road

The 2008 Arizona Soccer season begins this Sunday with the Wildcats hosting the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Mustangs, then traveling to Salt Lake City to take on the Utes from the University of Utah on Friday. Game time for both matches is 7 p.m.

Sunday, August 24 - Cal Poly SLO, 7 p.m. (Murphy Field, Tucson, Ariz.)

Friday, August 29 - at Utah, 7 p.m.

Noting the Opponents:

Cal Poly SLO: The Mustangs were picked to finish third in the Big West conference, a circuit loaded at the top with powerhouse UC Santa Barbara and two-time defending league co-champion Long Beach State. The Wildcats will also face these two teams in September. Cal Poly returns 14 letter-winners and seven starters from a team that reached the title game of the Big West conference tournament just one year ago. The Mustangs finished 8-9-3 last season.

Utah: The Utes held a tie with San Diego State for the third spot in the Mountain West Conference preseason poll. Utah returns three of their top four scoring threats from a year ago, including senior captain Katy Reineke, junior Kelly Isleib and sophomore Lauren Hair. Utah is led by head coach Rich Manning, now in his seventh year at the helm.  BYU, easily the preseason favorite in the league, captured seven of the eight first place votes. The Cats will face the Cougars in September.

Head Coach Dan Tobias: Currently in his sixth season at the reigns, Tobias became the schools leader in wins in only his third season. He led Arizona to its first Pac-10 Championship in 2004, and just one year later took them to the Sweet 16. Tobias has been named Pac-10 Coach of the Year two-times, in 2002 and 2004. This past summer, five-year assistant Lisa Oyen was promoted to the position of associate head coach. She will aim to help Arizona return back to the prominence of yesteryear, after a disappointing 2007 campaign in which the Wildcats finished 6-13-1.
