UA TO HONOR EIGHT JERSEYS SATURDAY
The University of Arizona will retire football jerseys in a ceremony at the USC game this Satruday Nov. 13 and honor eight Wildcats. Names in bold are scheduled to attend.
During halftime of the game, UA will honor former linebacker Ricky Hunley, safety Chuck Cecil, placekicker Steve McLaughlin, cornerbacks Antoine Cason, Darryll Lewis and Chris McAlister; and defensive tackle Rob Waldrop. They'll join the previously cited jersey worn by Art Luppino in a new location at the stadium. Luppino also has been invited to participate.
Jersey displays of former student-athletes whose careers were cut short by tragedy -- John "Button" Salmon, Damon Terrell and McCollins Umeh -- will remain in their current locations.
UA's departmental policy includes jersey honors for student-athletes who were national players of the year (Cason and Lewis-Thorpe Award; McAlister-Tatupu Award; McLaughlin-Groza Award; Waldrop-Outland Trophy and Nagurski Award), or inducted into the NFF College Football Hall of Fame (Hunley and Cecil). Jerseys (and their numbers) are honored, although the individual numbers themselves are not taken out of use under the UA policy.
For more information on the event call Roberta Quiroz of the UA Jim Click Hall of Champions, 520-621-2331. The game itself will be televised on ESPN, with a 6 p.m. kickoff.
