UA tennis attends 2009 ITA Southwest Regionals

The Arizona women's tennis team, led by sophomore Natasha Marks, continues competition at the 2009 ITA southwest Regionals.

In singles, sophomore Natasha Marks started off with a win over Cal State Northridge's Nina Jaworwski 6-l, 6-1 in the round of 64. In the round of 32 Marks took down Arizona State's Michelle Brycki 6-1, 6-2. Marks then defeated Pepperdine's Anamika Bhargava 6-4, 6-4 in the round of 16. In the quarter final round Marks fought hard to take down Arizona State's Micaela Hein 7-5, 5-7, 6-2. Sunday Marks will go up against UCLA's Yasmin Schnack in the semi-final round at 11 am.

Senior Ariane Masschelein started with a first round bye before defeating UC Santa Barbara's Annabel Gledden 6-2, 6-2. In the round of 32 Masschelein lost to USC's Leyla Entekhabi 6-2, 6-2.

Freshman Elizabeth Hammond made her Wildcat debut with a win over Pepperdine's Tara Panu 6-4, 6-2 in the round of 64. In the round of 32 Hammond lost to San Diego's Juliette Coupez 6-1, 6-0.

Sophomore Sarah Landsman started off with a win over San Diego's Lise Marbach 6-2, 6-1 in the round of 64. In the round of 32 Landsman took down San Diego State's Naseem Eslami 6-0, 6-4. In the round of 16 Landsman fought hard but lost to UCLA's Yasmin Schnack 7-6 (1), 7-6 (3).

Junior Jane Huh lost in the round of 64 to UC Santa Barbra's Natalia Lozano 6-2, 6-4. In the third round of consolation Huh defeated UC Riverside's Roxanne Plata 6-3, 6-1. In the fourth round of consolation Huh lost to Arizona State's Sianna Simmons 6-3, 6-1.

Senior Claire Rietsch lost in the opening round to San Diego State's Olivia Colman 6-0, 6-2. In the second round of consolation Rietsch defeated Cal State Fullerton's Tiffany Mai 6-0, 6-1. In the third round, Rietsch lost to Long Beach State's Deborah Armstrong 7-5, 6-4.

Freshman Shannon Cassidy started off with a withdrawal in the opening round to UC Riversides Taylor Raney due to injury. In the second round of consolation Cassidy lost to Hawaii's Mari Tadaki.

Sophomore Debora Castany, in the round of 64, lost to UC Irvine's Stephanie Hammel 6-3, 6-4. In consolation round three, Castany lost to San Diego State's Sierra Ellison 7-5, 4-6, 6-2.

In doubles, Marks and Rietsch defeated Cal State Fullerton's Mai and De la Cruz 8-3 in the round of 32. In the round of 16 they took down Arizona State's Simmons and McKenna 8-3. Next Marks and Rietsch defeated UCLA's Montez and Johansson 8-6. Sunday they will go up against UCLA's Remynse and Schnack at 9 am.

Castany and Huh, after first round bye, lost to Pepperdine's Bhargava and Walters 8-0. In consolation they lost to Cal State Northridge's Doane and Yang 8-0.

Landsman and Masschelein started off doubles in the round of 32 with a win over Long Beach State's Jeczmionka and Luzar 8-4. In the round of 16 they lost to UC Irvine's Byron and Hammel 8-1.

Play at the ITA Southwest Regionals continues through Monday, October 26.
