PG Crosschecker's Preview of Arizona in PDF Format?

????????????TUCSON, Ariz. ?C The Arizona baseball team, ranked No. 1 in the Collegiate Baseball preseason poll, has been named the team to beat in 2008 by another outlet in the weeks leading up to opening day.?PGCrosschecker.com, a division of Perfect Game USA, released its preseason top 100 on Thursday and placed the Wildcats atop its poll.

?

????????????ˇ?Iˇ?ve always said its better to be No. 1 than No. 1001,ˇ± said head coach Andy Lopez. ˇ?The early recognition is nice, but we still have to go out and face a very difficult non-conference schedule and what might be the deepest Pac-10 Conference in recent history.

?

ˇ?A lot goes into a year and our preseason preparation is going to be key for us. We canˇ?t get too wrapped up in what people are saying about us, we have to stay healthy and weˇ?ve got to play the game the way itˇ?s supposed to be played, which starts with a sound three weeks in the preseason,ˇ± Lopez said.

?

The Wildcats return nearly a full roster of established veterans, including preseason All-Americans C.J. Ziegler (.355, 13 HR, 63 RBI) and Preston Guilmet (12-2, 1.87 ERA, 146 K), as well as seniors Colt Sedbrook (.335, 1 HR, 24 RBI) and David Coulon (4-3, 4.98 ERA, 62 K) and a stocked junior class featuring T.J. Steele (.323, 7 HR, 47 RBI), Brad Glenn (.333, 10 HR, 62 RBI) and Jon Gaston (.319, 6 HR, 33 RBI).

?

The pitching staff, which returns seven arms that logged significant innings in 2007, starts with reigning Pac-10 Pitcher of the Year Guilmet and closes with a right-left combo out of the bullpen composed of sophomore Jason Stoffel (5-0, 5 saves, 1.87 ERA) and junior Daniel Schlereth (.3-1, 8 saves, 2.68 ERA). The 2007 pitching staff posted the lowest team ERA in 30 years at UA, the second-most strikeouts in school history and allowed the fewest homers since 1974.

?

Under new NCAA guidelines the Wildcats will have to wait until Feb. 1 for the first full team practice leading up to their season opener against Georgia in Athens, Ga., on Feb. 22.
