TUCSON - The Arizona Wildcat men's tennis team began play at the 2011 Balloon Fiesta Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., today. The tournament is hosted by the University of New Mexico and consists of two 32-player singles draws and a 32-team doubles draw.
"All in all it was a solid day," said head coach Tad Berkowitz. "We had a couple of hiccups with our doubles but we will get after it again tomorrow."
In Flight A singles play, Carlos Bermudez had a bye in round of 32 play and defeated Steven Young from the US Air Force Academy. With the win Bermudez will advance to the quarterfinals where he will play Landon Kinsley who represents the US Air Force Academy. Also competing in Flight A was Mike Pigou who made his colligate tennis debut this weekend. Pigou had a bye in the round of 32 and lost to Lance Wilhelm of the US Air Force Academy in round of 16 play.
In Flight B singles play, both Robin Chou and Frank Chen had byes in round of 32 play. In round the round of 16, Chou, a freshman from Austin, Texas, defeated Alex Mancayo from Colorado-State Pueblo. Chou will play Rob Martin of Northern Arizona in the quarterfinals. Chen defeated Yang Yang from New Mexico Military Institute and will move on to the Flight B quarterfinals where he will battle Dave Reddy also from New Mexico Military Institute.
In doubles action, Chen and Chou teamed fell to Vinni Lodolo and Stephen Katrien of the US Air Force Academy. After a bye in the round of 32 Pigou and Bermudez were edged by Ian Supple and E. Corona-Saunders from New Mexico.
