TCU’s 12-under 276 leads team event; Frogs’ Killeen has first round individual lead

               

TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The University of Arizona men’s golf team shot a seven-under-par 281 total and stands in sixth place Sunday at the National Invitational Tournament at Omni Tucson National Golf Club.

 

Arizona’s seven-under tally placed the team sixth in the 14-team field, five strokes behind tournament-leader TCU, who fired a 12-under 278.  The Horned Frogs’ top three golfers were a combined 13 strokes under par on the day.  UNLV (277), Arizona junior varsity, New Mexico and Arizona State (280) rounded out the top five places.

 

Leading the way for Arizona individually was Brian Prouty.  Playing for the Wildcat JV, Prouty shot a five-under 67 and is tied for second place with five other golfers.  Sophomore Henry Liaw shot a four-under 68 and is tied for eighth place.  TCU’s J.J. Killeen holds the first-round lead in the 75-man field with a six-under 66.

 

Also posting under par totals for the Wildcat varsity were Nathan Lashley, who’s two-under 70 tied him for 17th place, and Travis Esway, who’s one-under 71 tied him for 29th place.  Nick Juszczak, who tallied a four-under 68 and stands in a tie for eighth, and Trey Denton, who carded a two-under 70 and is tied for 17th place, both posted red numbers for the UA JV.

 

Senior Kipp Riehle, competing as an individual, shot a two-under 70 and is tied for 17th place.

 

The 54-hole National Invitational Tournament runs through Tuesday at Tucson National Golf Club, a par 72, 7,094-yard layout.
