TUCSON, Ariz. - University of Arizona men's golfer John Kostis lost his first-round match at the 2009 United States Amateur Championship in Tulsa, Okla.

Kostis, seeded No. 64 after the stroke-play portion of the event, lost 5 & 4 to top-seed Tim Jackson in Wednesday's first round.

A junior from Paradise Valley, Ariz., Kostis qualified for match play after carding a 73-75=148 (+8) in the two rounds of stroke play at Southern Hills Country Club. He was one of four players at eight-over to qualify for match play.

Kostis posted a 76.39 stroke average over 18 rounds in 2008-09 and earned first-team Pac-10 all-Academic honors.
