LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- The University of Arizona menˇ?s tennis squad kicked off its fall season this weekend at the Aggie Invitational in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
Sophomore Ravid Hazi had a great overall tournament reaching the finals in singles play before falling against New Mexico State freshman Jim Brouleau, 7-6; 4-6; 6-4.
Hazi and freshman David Humphreys performed well in doubles action, knocking off New Mexicoˇ?s Derek Lynch and David Flodberg in the quarterfinals, 8-5, before coming up short against Abilene Christianˇ?s Ryan Hudson and Juan Nunez in the semifinals, 8-2.
Senior Nathan Cochrane also had a very solid tournament going 4-1 overall in singles play highlighted by wins over Luke Hawk of Abilene Christian on Saturday, 6-4; 6-2, and Western New Mexicoˇ?s Valu Fa on Sunday, 6-1; 6-3.
Humphreys notched two victories in singles action with wins against New Mexicoˇ?s Joe Wood, 6-2; 3-6; 6-2, and against New Mexico Stateˇ?s Alejandro De Mucha, who had to retire due to illness.
Arizona Head Coach Tad Berkowitz said he was very pleased with the teamˇ?s performance and that they attained their goal of playing as many matches as possible in this early tournament.
Coach Berkowitz went onto say that all three of his players gave him exactly the type of effort he was hoping for and is very optimistic for the upcoming year.
Arizona will look to build upon their momentum when they compete in the Polo Ralph Lauren All America Tournament in Tulsa, Oklahoma September 29th ?C October 7th.
