Senior Courtney Karst (Centennial, Colo.) and the Arizona volleyball team (16-10, 8-9) defeated Utah (14-11, 6-9), by a score of 3-0 on Friday night at McKale Center. The Wildcats defeated the Utes, 25-23, 25-23, 25-23.
In the first set, Arizona leapt out to an 8-5 lead behind kills from Kingdon and freshman Taylor Arizobal (Dana Hills, Calif.), Jackson and Karst. Utah could never narrow the margin and Karst posted seven kills to give the Wildcats set one, 25-23.
Arizona came out in set two with five kills from four players to go up 8-5, but the Utes came back to tie it at eight. After that, the teams traded points, neither leading by more than two points. At 22-22, Arizobal and freshman Rachel Rhoades (San Diego, Calif.) recorded a block and Kingdon posted a kill to put the Wildcats up, 2-0.
The third set proved to be a game of runs, as the teams played evenly until tied at 5-5. Kills from Karst, Kingdon, Arizobal and Jackson gave Arizona a 5-1 run. After that, Utah went on its own run and led for the first time since the beginning of the second set by a score of 16-11. Arizona fired back, going a 6-1 run to take the lead, 21-20, but the Utes would not go away and tied the score once again at 23. Kingdon recorded a kill and a block with Jackson and the Wildcats took set three, 25-23 and the match, 3-0.
Arizona will be back in action to face Colorado on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. at McKale Center.
