NCAA Region 1 Softball - Saturday, May 22, in Tucson

Game 12 - Louisiana-Lafayette 3, Northwestern 0

Brooke Mitchell kept the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns alive in the NCAA Region 1 Softball Championships with a three-hit 3-0 shutout over Northwestern, sending the Wildcats home at 34-20 overall and sending UL into the loser's bracket final against host Arizona.

Louisiana (58-7) took the lead in the third. Hillary Guidry led off with an infield single, moved up on a sacrifice by Tiffany Hebert, and scored on Holly Tankersley's single up the middle.

The Ragin' Cajuns tacked on another run in the fourth to make it 2-0. Brittany Bryant drew a walk, moved to second on a wilde pitch by Eileen Canney and walked home on Ashley Evans' triple past a diving Jessica Miller in left field. Lacey Bertucci drove in Evans with a grounder to deep short.

The Cajuns set a school record with the 58 victories, and are 3-1 in regional play as the fifth seed.

Northwestern was making its second consecutive trip to the NCAAs and won two games in the tourney this year, 8-1 over UC-Santa Barbara and 5-3 over Soutn Carolina. NU dropped its second round game to winner's bracket titlist Oklahoma, 8-0, Friday morning.

Northwestern Coach Kate Drohan - "We had our moments today and we played some great softball. We also had some bad moments as well. (UL's starting pitcher, Brooke) Mitchell pitched a great game."

"I feel we had a terrific group, and we had a great group of players that have helped to build a solid team. I will miss the three seniors, we had a solid group of seniors up the middle."

Northwestern Senior Carri Leto - "We were going to the plate looking to hit the ball down in the zone. Mitchell has a great rise ball, and we just could not lay off of it."
