Matt Caponi enters his fourth season with the Wildcats and his third as an assistant coach. He served as defensive graduate assistant during the 2012 season and was then promoted to safeties coach prior to the 2013 season.

Senior Jared Tevis led Caponi’s corps in 2014, ranking second on the team and fourth in the Pac-12 in total tackles with 120. An All-Pac-12 honoree, Tevis totaled 9.0 tackles for loss, two interceptions, four passes broken up and two forced fumbles. He was also a semifinalist for the National Football Foundation Campbell Trophy and was a three-time Pac-12 All-Academic honoree.

Arizona’s safeties accounted for 224 tackles in 2013, nearly a third of the Wildcats’ total stops. Arizona had five interception returns for touchdowns, tied for most among FBS teams. UA intercepted 18 passes in 2013, its most in a single campaign since totaling 16 in 2008.

With Caponi’s guidance, Tra’Mayne Bondurant paced the secondary with four interceptions for 79 return yards and two touchdowns. Will Parks contributed with two interceptions for 88 return yards and a touchdown in the AdvoCare V100 Bowl victory.

Prior to his arrival in Tucson, Caponi was a graduate assistant at Pittsburgh in 2011 and was the defensive coordinator at Washington and Jefferson College for three seasons (2008-10).

He worked with the linebackers in 2010 and was in charge of the secondary from 2006-09 at W&J. During the 2008 season, the Presidents advanced to the NCAA National Quarterfinals. Caponi got his start in coaching in 2004 as a student assistant at his alma mater, Mount Union College, and was Mount Union's JV coordinator and linebackers coach in 2005.

Caponi was a team captain and starting safety at Mount Union, earning all-conference second-team honors as a senior in 2003. MUC went 55-1 during his four years including three Division III national titles. He earned a degree in physical education in 2005.
