Position: Special Teams Coordinator/DEs
Hometown: San Diego, Calif.
High School: Helix High School

Former Wildcat defensive back and coach Jeff Hammerschmidt joined the Arizona staff in 2008 after defining his early coaching career on the defensive side of play. He's special teams coordinator and works with the defensive ends. He has coached all defensive positions in his career.

Hammerschmit, who worked earlier at Arizona under Dick Tomey, adds Wildcat heritage as a former star player.

Hammerschmidt, 43, was a four-year letterman, three-year starting safety and earned first-team All-Pac-10 honors as a junior at Arizona in 1989. He coached at UA under Tomey for four years after completing play, from 1992 to 1995, working with defensive backs his final two years.

He came to Arizona's staff in the second stint from San Jose State, where he was linebackers coach for Tomey in 2007. He also has additional Pac-10 experience as the outside linebackers coach and special teams coordinator at Stanford in 2006 and worked under another former Arizona defensive coach, Rich Ellerson, at Cal Poly in 2005 and at Southern Utah from 1996-97.

He also was defensive coordinator for five years at St. Mary's and Montana, and coordinated special teams for two years in the Big Ten at Indiana.

After his playing career as a Wildcat - which included some play at option quarterback in 1987 -- he began his career as a graduate assistant on Tomey's 1992 staff and became a fulltime UA secondary coach in 1993, working in Tucson three seasons.
