Arizona Head Coach Tad Berkowitz enters his eighth season as the head coach of the Wildcats. During the 2008-09 season he was named the Pac-10 Men's Tennis Coach of the Year and the Wilson/ITA West Region Coach of the Year. He joined the program in 2004 and has held numerous national and collegiate coaching positions. He was promoted to the head coaching position in the spring of 2005 after serving as hall-of-famer Bill Wright's assistant. Berkowitz was a top collegiate player for the Universities of Kentucky and New Mexico, respectively.
Super Seven: Arizona returns seven players from the 2011-2012 season. Juniors Giacomo Miccini, Kieren Thompson, Mario Urquidi, and Andre Vidaller return as the most experienced members of the team. Sophomores Carlos Bermudez, Robin Chou and Sumeet Shinde also return as key contributors.
Fresh Four: The Wildcats welcome four new players to the 2013 roster. Freshman Matt Dunn joined the team in the fall along with sophomore transfer Ben Lee. Joining the team at the start of the spring season are freshman Naoki Takeda and junior transfer Fredrik Ask.
Last Time Out: Last weekend the Cats dropped two Pac-12 matches as they traveled to face Stanford and California. Against Stanford, Arizona dropped the doubles point with losses on courts two and three and went on to win only one singles match. On court two, Fredrik Ask topped No. 103-ranked Nolan Page for Arizona’s only point of the day. The win would also mark Arizona’s only singles victory of the weekend. Against California, the Cats dropped the doubles point with losses on courts one and three and left the match on court two unfinished. In singles play, the Wildcats were unable to secure a win as they fell, 7-0.
Match Data: In their final match of the regular season, the Wildcats (10-12, 0-6 Pac-12) will travel to Salt Lake City, Utah to take on the Utah Utes (11-11, 1-5 Pac-12).
The Series vs. Utah: This will be the 38th meeting of the two schools with Arizona holding the 30-7 all-time advantage.
The Last meeting: On April 21, 2012, the Cats dropped a 5-2 decision to the Utes at LaNelle Robson Tennis Center. Arizona dropped the doubles point with losses on courts one and three and leaving the match on court two unfinished. In singles play, the teams fought a close battle but Carlos Bermudez and Kieren Thompson clinched Arizona’s only wins on courts four and five.
Scouting the Utes: Last weekend, the Utes fell in two Pac-12 matches as they traveled to northern California to take on California and Stanford. On Friday, the Utes dropped the doubles point with losses on courts one and three and went on to win only one singles match, on court six, en route to a 6-1 loss to the Golden Bears. On Saturday, Utah fell in all three doubles matches and clinched singles matches on courts two and five as they dropped a 5-2 decision to the Stanford Cardinal.
