TUCSON - Former University of Arizona football offensive lineman Trace Biskin and kicker John Bonano were named to the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame 2013 Hampshire Honor Society, which is comprised of college football players from all divisions of play who each maintained a cumulative 3.2 GPA or better throughout their college career. A total of 703 players from 259 schools qualified for membership in the society's seventh year, marking the highest school participation in the history of the program, which began in 2007.
A 2012 team captain, Biskin played with an offensive line that allowed UA to lead the Pac-12 in total offense for four-straight weeks (weeks 6-9) and rank as high as fourth nationally in weeks 3, 7 and 9. Arizona's offensive triple-threat attack featured a 3,000-yard passer (Matt Scott - 3,620 yards), a 1,500-yard rusher (Ka'Deem Carey - 1,929 yards) and a 1,000-yard receiver (Austin Hill - 1,364 yards).
Biskin was named Pac-12 Second-Team All-Academic in 2012 and Pac-12 All-Academic Honorable Mention in 2011. He earned his bachelor's degree in May 2012 in political science. He is enrolled in UA's graduate school, studying international security.
In 2012, Bonano ranked fifth in the Pac-12 in scoring and No. 1 among kickers with 7.8 points per game. In his final campaign, he was 58-of-59 in PATs and 14-of-20 in field goals. He also ran in for a two-point conversion against ASU. Bonano's PAT with 0:19 to play in the Gildan New Mexico Bowl gave the Wildcats the go-ahead score to win the game, 49-48. He owns the school record for consecutive PAT kicks made with 73.
Bonano was named a 2012 CoSIDA Second-team Academic All-American, the 2012 Pac-12 Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year, was a three-time Pac-12 All-Academic honoree and earned an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship,
Additionally, Bonano earned a 2013 Pillar of Excellence Award, given out by Arizona's Honors College to distinguished graduating seniors. On March 3, Bonano was honored by the Southern Arizona Chapter of the National Football Foundation as a 2013 Scholar-Athlete.
The NFF Hampshire Honor Society capitalizes on the NFF's current National Scholar-Athlete program greatly expanding the number of scholar-athletes the NFF can recognize each year. The program further strengthens the organization's leadership role in encouraging academic performance by the student-athletes who play football at the more than 700 college and universities with football programs nationwide. The initiative has honored 4,081 student-athletes since its inception.
Qualifications for membership in the NFF Hampshire Honor Society include being a starter or a significant substitute in one's last year of eligibility at an accredited NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision, Football Championship Subdivision, Division II, Division III, or an NAIA college or university; achieving a 3.2 cumulative grade point average throughout entire course of undergraduate study; and meeting all NCAA-mandated progress towards degree requirements and graduation.
