TUCSON - The University of Arizona Wildcat men's and No. 5 women's track and field teams wrapped up competition at the Pac-12 Championships combined events this weekend in Los Angeles, Calif. On Sunday, the Wildcats added one point to the women's team total and they also added two points to the men's score for the Pac-12 Championships.
Junior Keegan Cooke posted a wind-aided time of 15.64 (+2.7) in the 110-meter hurdles to start the day. That time was good for 774 points and tenth place of the 12 remaining decathletes. He had the second-best toss of his career in the discus, throwing 126-10 (38.67m). Cooke's clearance of 13-5.25 (4.10m) in the pole vault tied for seventh place and added 645 points to his score. Cooke threw 176-8 (53.86m) in the javelin and took fourth place overall while tacking on 646 points to his total. He finished the day with an eighth-place finish in the 1,500-meter run with a personal-best time of 4:37.69. Prior to that, his personal best was 5:04. 23. Overall, Cooke tallied a personal-best score of 7,078 points and earned a seventh-place finish. Cooke's previous best was 6,573. He is the first Wildcat to earn All-Pac-12 honors in the decathlon since Chris McGovern (6th place; 6,829 points) in 2009. Cooke's seventh-place finish added two points to the men's team total. Dakotah Keys (Oregon) tallied 8,001 points and earned a first-place finish in the decathlon.
Junior Steven Scarvelis clocked a wind-aided time of 15.47 (+2.6) in the 110-meter hurdles to start Sunday's competition. That time was good for eighth place overall and 794 points. In the discus, he posted a mark of 115-8 (35.27m) and added 569 points to his score. Scarvelis tied a personal-best clearance of 13-1.5 (4.00m) in the pole vault, good for 617 points. He posted a mark of 127-0 (38.71m) in the javelin and added 423 points to the total. Scarvelis' personal-best time of 4:24.84 in the 1,500-meter race was good for third place in the race and 779 points. Previously, his top time was 4:34.07. He finished the competition in ninth place with 6,666 points, a personal-best total. At the 2013 Jim Click Shootout, his first ever decathlon, he scored 6,431.
Junior Amber Passalaqua started the day with the long jump where she posted a wind-aided (+2.4) mark of 16-8.75 (5.10m). The javelin followed and Passalaqua threw 97-5 (29.69m) and took eighth place. Passalaqua ran the 800 meters in 2:28.74 and added 709 points to her total. She took eighth place in the event and eighth place overall with 4,773 points. She tacked on one point to the Arizona women's team total for the Pac-12 Championships. It is the second-straight year that Passalaqua has earned All-Pac-12 honors. She also took eighth place in 2012. Keia Pinnick (Arizona State) won the competition with a score of 5,801 points.
The Pac-12 Championships with the running and field events for all athletes will begin on Saturday, May 11 at the same location.
