TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona football held what turned out to be its only practice on Thursday in the morning at Kindall Field/Sancet Stadium. The evening portion of the two-a-day has been cancelled. The Wildcats were dressed in shorts and helmets. Below is a transcript of head coach Rich Rodriguez’s comments following practice.
On today’s practice:
“We have a lot of work to do. Our effort isn’t outstanding but it’s not underwhelming either. Some spots are good but we have a long way to go.”
On two weeks until the season opener:
“Too close for us. Not having a preseason game or exhibition game against anyone else to judge where you’re at is kind of difficult. Games mean so much and this is the only level that doesn’t have a scrimmage or practice against anyone else.”
On Saturday’s scrimmage:
“We won’t have a full scrimmage. We won’t full scrimmage now, next week or in the spring. (How many plays do players get in) Live plays? Maybe 20 for each group. The younger guys maybe 40; that’s probably a high number for them.”
On the potential of players playing both offense and defense:
“We will have a few guys. Richard Morrison may play some receiver. I don’t know anyone else. There may be some linebackers helping us on offense at fullback.”
On freshman Scooby Wright:
“I thought our young group of linebackers were going to be able to help us and had to help us some this year but Scooby has some natural instincts. I like all our young linebackers. Scooby has stood out in every practice.”
