TUCSON, Ariz. –Arizona soccer completed a preseason training session Tuesday morning at Murphey Field at Mulcahy Stadium. The Wildcats continue to prepare for their first match on Fri., Aug. 23 against Florida International.

Below are assistant coach Paul Nagy and freshman Jaden DeGracie’s comments following practice:

Assistant Coach Paul Nagy:

What are your thoughts on the team after the first few practices?

“They’ve come along great. We were at a starting point from day one and after the first few weeks of preseason, we’ve come a long way. We still have a long way to go but the girls are progressing nicely.”

What would you say is the biggest improvement in terms of the team?
“I work with the defenders and the defensive shape of the whole team and we’ve been working on keeping our shape and putting pressure on the ball. It’s the one thing we’ve really focused on and they’ve done a wonderful job.”

Freshman forward Jaden DeGracie:

What do you individually hope to bring to the team?

“A different aspect of playing and I hope I can bring energy and work ethic. I have a flip throw so I hope I can get around the corner and get balls in to give my teammates opportunities to score, or score myself.”

How do you feel preseason has been going both individually and as a team?

“Individually, I feel it’s been going very well because I give 110% with everything I do. You have to focus on what you can control and I can control my work ethic and taking what the coaches are saying and trying to implement it into my own playing style, so I feel I have done that. As a team, I’m amazed at how hard these girls work so you not only push yourself but your teammates are right there with you.”

What was your first impression of Coach Amato?

“The first thing I noticed is how big his smile is and how welcoming he is. He has a warming personality so he’s not only somebody you want as a coach but also somebody you want as a mentor. He’s not only a coach to me he’s a role model.”

What are you most looking forward to for the upcoming season?

“I’m looking for a challenge. I want us to come together and compete and I want us to win. I want us to go through battles and to go out fighting.”
