TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona women’s soccer will host its home opener on Fri., Aug. 30 vs. the UC Riverside Bears. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m. On Sun., Sept. 1, the Wildcats are back on the road to Columbus, Ohio to play No. 24 Ohio State at 3 p.m. MST.
Last Weekend: The Wildcats began the 2013 season on the road playing both Florida International and Florida Atlantic. In the 4-2 triumph over FIU, sophomore Kaitlyn Lopez scored her first career goal in the first five minutes of the game. Senior Jazmin Ponce and junior Alexandra Doller also scored goals in the victory. Playing FAU on Sunday, the Wildcats were tied 0-0 with 11 minutes remaining in the match when Ponce scored the game winning goal, crediting freshman Jaden DeGracie with the assist.
About the Bears: UC Riverside (1-1) began the 2013 season hosting UNLV and fell to the Rebels, 3-2. In the loss, both Celina Valencia and Tyler Cunningham scored goals. On the road, the Bears came away with a 2-1 overtime win against San Jose State thanks to Tatum Lockett scoring both goals for UC Riverside. Last season, the Bears posted an overall record of 7-10-3 under interim head coach Nat Gonzalez.
About the Buckeyes: Ohio State started out strong with a 2-0 record. In a 3-2 victory over Morehead State, three Buckeye players scored goals in Lindsay Agnew, Nichelle Prince and Kristen Niederhaus. The Buckeyes won 2-1 in an overtime match against Eastern Michigan thanks to goals by Ellyn Gruber and Lindsay Agnew. Last season, the Buckeyes posted an overall record of 16-4-1 under 17th-year head coach Lori Walker.
Amato Era: Head coach Tony Amato is in his debut season at the helm of the Arizona program. With a 2-0 start, Amato has led his team to the best start the program has seen since 2008. As the head coach at Stephen F. Austin for three years, Amato led the team to conference titles in 2011 and 2012. The Ladyjacks made an NCAA appearance in 2012 and Amato was named Southland Conference Coach of the Year in both 2011 and 2012. He has a career record of 127-48-14 in his 10 seasons as a head coach. Amato is accompanied by assistant coaches Paul Nagy and Kylie Louw.
