TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona soccer completed practice Wednesday night at Murphey Field at Mulcahy Stadium. The Wildcats continue to prepare for the Sun Devil Classic on Sept. 6-8 in Tempe, Ariz. Arizona will match up with Kansas on Fri., Sept. 6 at 4:30 p.m. and vs. Illinois on Sun., Sept. 8 at 11 a.m. Both matches will be played at Sun Devil Stadium.
Below are Assistant Coach Kylie Louw and senior Ana-Maria Montoya’s comments following practice:
Assistant Head Coach Kylie Louw:
How have you been preparing the team this week?
“We let them recover on Tuesday and Wednesday because we had a hectic weekend but today we worked on our strengths. We like to get the ball forward and into empty spaces so we worked with our forwards on getting the ball in. The defenders worked on technical stuff that we want everybody to use so we cleaned that up a bit. All in all, we’re trying to carry the remains from the past weekend to this weekend.”
After the first games, what are you most impressed with?
“The girls’ have fought and we know that they are a very hard working team. They have carried the momentum through all the games that we have won and the draw with Ohio State. They definitely take what we train them and apply it to the game so they are very coachable players and we really appreciate that.”’
Senior Ana-Maria Montoya:
What are the emotions of the team after the success so far this season?
“It’s put a lot of confidence into the team and that’s something we really needed over the years. It’s given us that extra boost to get through training and practice.”
How has your role on the team changed from last season?
“As a senior it’s more people who look up to me so I need to be a good role model.”
What difference do you notice from last year compared to this year?
“The new coaches have brought a whole new dynamic to the team. There’s structure within the program and we have core values and we keep going back to them and referencing them in everything we do.”
