Cats Win Arizona Desert Classic with 3-0 Sweep of Utah Valley

TUCSON, Ariz.Madi Kingdon had 13 kills and 10 digs to lead the Arizona volleyball team to the Arizona Desert Classic tournament title after sweeping Utah Valley 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-15), Saturday night inside McKale Center.

Kingdon recorded her second double-double of the year and was named tournament MVP for her efforts. Freshman setter Penina Snuka just missed a double-double as she dished out 32 assists to go along with nine digs, three kills and three blocks. Snuka was named to the all-tournament team along with Olivia Magill, who had eight kills on .500 hitting to go along with two blocks. Candace Nicholson equaled Kingdon with 10 digs to lead the Arizona (5-1) defense.

Meanwhile, with the win, Arizona head coach Dave Rubio earned his 400th victory as head coach of the Wildcats. He has already won the most matches of any coach in school history.

Arizona hit .264 as a team, while limiting Utah Valley (2-5) to just .118 hitting. The Wildcats also out-blocked the Wolverines 7.0 – 4.5 thanks to five blocks in the final set. Arizona took home the tournament title after finishing a perfect 3-0, while not dropping a single set in the event.

The Wildcats stormed out to a quick 7-2 advantage in the opening set and they never looked back. Utah Valley cut the lead to two on a couple of occasions but Arizona later extended the advantage and cruised to a 25-17 victory in the set. The Wildcats hit .323 in the set, while Utah Valley was only able to muster a .194 attack efficiency. Magill led the Arizona offense with five kills on .833 hitting.

The second set started with Arizona gaining a slight lead, but the Wildcats could never quite pull away. However, with the Cats in front 11-9, Arizona won the next four points thanks to two kills and a block by Halli Amaro. From there, Utah Valley cut the lead to two on a few occasions but the Wildcats held on for the 25-22 victory. Kingdon led the Arizona offense with six kills in the set.

Arizona came out in the third set much like they did in the first two sets. The Wildcat defense was the factor in the third as they held the Wolverines to a -.056 hitting percentage, while Arizona hit .216 to earn a 25-15 victory. In addition, the Wildcats out-blocked Utah Valley, 5-0 in the set. Amaro and Kingdon each had three kills to lead the Arizona offense in the frame.

Macky Treanor led Utah Valley with six kills on the night, while McKenna Tait finished with a match-high 12 digs.
